I found a model on one of my visits to the polycount forums that I felt
looked cool and skinnable. Upon downloading the sdk, though, Flaws in the
making of the mesh and skinmaps stopped me from being able to draw a texture
for it, which was a shame as the main bulk of shape was very nicely blocked
out. Then what started out as a helping hand to MoP turned into to something
else.. I took it upon me to redo most of the model, all the uvmaps, and get
the brothers Grim involved in the project, and the result came to be one of
the most popular in-progress ppm's on polycount.com in quite a while. The
discussions around and the people involved with this project escalated..
unfortunately I couldn't partake much since the initial work was done, but
it's been fun watching this baby grow, and has it ever! Great job from
everybody involved!

Well, I'd like to thank people, but if I listed them all I'd be here all week. Gigantic thanks to Per128
and the Brothers Grim for picking up my sorry-looking project and throwing it to the top of the Q3 player
pile... Without those guys, this model would have just been an average, nothing-special PPM which would
probably have disappeared over time. Now, I hope it will strike fear into the hearts of Quake3'ers everywhere :)

Also large thanks to HyPer for indirectly tutorialising me on the ways of mesh construction and UV-mapping
(which I'm much better at now, incidentally), and to all the people in #model_design on ETG, and all the nice
fellows in #q3mods on irc.telefragged.com for keeping me happy in my old age. And let's not forget EvilD from
CroTeam (of Serious Sam fame), who popped up unexpectedly with an amazing skin for us, and he kindly did the Red
and Blue CTF variants (which also look damn cool).

This is a model and a project which has taught me a hell of a lot - my modelling, skinning and skinmeshing skills
have increased greatly since going through with this, so look out for future models from me :)

Erm, I would have included my Chaos skin for this pack, but I've been too busy to get it finished (and the fact
that my skinning techniques changed since it took so long for me to do it...I think I'll start again from
scratch and release it as an add-on skin, maybe along with Per128's skin if he gets time to finish it.)

Place in your baseq3 dir and bring down console to set your /com_hunkmegs 150  then /vid_restart
Thats only if you get bumped out of Quake3 trying to load Q4Gladiator.

We would like to start off by saying thank you to the polycount community in general for your support
and crits during our contribution to this model. A few in particular Wrath and skullbox,  for your
suggestions on what you saw in the animation's and had a direct influence on the outcome skullbox mainly
for the weight issues and Wrath for that also, along with giving us the idea on the punch action on walk 
and run. James harlyquinn taylor for bringing to our attention the animated icon which was originally seen
in his all-american-hero skin although the beta version did not work for us. We used the idea for warning sign icon on the high detail Q4gladiator. Thankx goes to Ogro and Magarinal..  and a big thumbs up to
Paul Jaquays for his technical support, and really constantly being there for the entire quake community,
a solitary voice which carried our thoughts to the heart of id. He fought hard for you all ;) We wish him
all the  best at his new job.

Now comes the Q4Gladiator:
We have included 2 versions of the character one to look at as we envisioned it named Q4Gladiator.pk3
And a low version Q4Gladiator_Lo which consists of approx. 2000 fewer frames of animation and smaller
Skin files along with shorter sounds. You could actually get around the game pretty comfortable with this 
Smaller version of Gladiator.

There is a special .cfg file that will extend the respawn time that allows you to see the long death 
animation's play in the HUD. This .cfg file will also place the gladiators weapon on your shoulder so you 
get more of the gladiator feel.  It will also load a model viewer which works off the standard 5 on the 
keypad, use 4 and 6 to rotate around and 8 & 2 to zoom in and out.
You will first have to bring down the console and type /devmap Q3dm17 or what ever level you want to get
Cheats enabled then type the .cfg file name /exec Q4   you will notice the gun immediately jump to your 
right shoulder. The death sounds are quite long and if you wish to respawn quickly they will continue to 
run. We have taken care of that as well by binding K on your key pad to KILL the death sounds only.
The low version has short sounds and is not necessary but is included in the pk3.
Gun position is cheat protected so you have to /devmap "mapname" to make it work.

You already know the Q4Gladiator comes with his own custom weapon but we have also included a 
custom gauntlet that will flip up the front barrel of the gun and drill down your enemies. 
We also gave him a custom hologram location device that he uses to locate his enemies that he will turn on 
from time to time in the idle animation. In the High version of the model you will notice that the gladiator 
will practice working on his weapon handling skills.
There is also custom foot steps which sound differently than the stock mech footsteps, they are named
snd-Q4Gladiator-footsteps.pk3. Place them in the baseq3 dir, they will override the stock mech footsteps 
you can easily add or remove them because they are a separate pk3 file. 
This was a nice model to work on we learned a ton and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we do. ;)

:Some technical notes about adding additional CTF skins to quake3 arena:
There are extra CTF skins available in Q4Gladiator this explains how we did it.
This is just our version on how to add the new selectable ctf skins.
For this example I will be using the TIMEX blue skin as the additional CTF blue in the HI version.
1)Create an extra directory off the main directory of your model
e.g /models/players/Q4Gladiator/TIMEX_blue  a special skin file goes in here.
2) Add one file in the newly created directory. Head_blue.skin.
The name is different from the one that goes in the main dir explained in the next
step but they have the same contents.
3) You will now need 2 sets of complete skin files in the main directory /models/players/Q4Gladiator
The first will be what quake3 will read in the select screen the second set will be what quake3 needs to
Read for ingame CTF play. 
To make sense of which added skins are available for CTF i used the "_blue" naming convention.
head_TIMEX_blue.skin, head_TIMEX_blue_blue.skin, lower_TIMEX_blue.skin, lower_TIMEX_blue_blue.skin,
upper_TIMEX_blue.skin, upper_TIMEX_blue_blue.skin
The skin files in head, lower, upper are identical. Just a little crazy redundant, but hey it works.
Now add the icon_TIMEX_blue.tga in the main directory /models/players/Q4Gladiator
If you would like to do Red CTF just repeat 1-3 and substitute red for blue. 
Simple enough, go into your favorite CTF level and pick the new additional _blue skin ;D 

Known Bugs:
Lightning gun trail in sky, This is due to throwing the tag weapon so far off screen as to hide the weapon.  We have included a pk3 that will hide the lightning gun trail.

The Q4Gladiator was compiled with popNfresh in conjuction with Npherno. 2,812 total frames at 15fps.
Fhew... that was as short as we could possibly make it.
